UAE's MoFA eyes manslaughter case of South African doctor

ABU DHABI // In a statement on their website today, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said it is paying close attention to the progress of the case of Professor Cyril Karabus.

The South African oncologist was accused of causing a young girl's death by failing to give her a blood transfusion while she was undergoing treatment at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City more than 10 years ago.

The professor was originally tried in absentia in 2004 and found guilty.

Following his arrest at Dubai International airport on August 18, 2012, the original ruling was overturned so he could stand trial in person.

Over the past 168 days there have been at least 16 hearings into the case, mostly as a result of medical records that were never supplied to prosecutors.
