UAE Volleyball Association secretary's jail term for cheque fraud upheld

DUBAI // A UAE Volleyball Association secretary who embezzled Dh68,000 from the organisation had his one-year jail sentence upheld by the Appeals Court.

The court also upheld the Dh68,000 fine handed to the Egyptian OS, 24, and the order for him to repay the same amount to the association.

The secretary had taken four of the association's cheques and forged signatures on them so that he could pay them into his bank account. The embezzlement was discovered when an accountant carried out an audit for the association. Following the discovery the accountant received a call from the secretary, who told him he was planning to flee to Egypt. The accountant tipped off police and the secretary was arrested.

OS will be deported after completing his prison term.
