Two women face jail for using marijuana

Two women are facing four years in jail for consuming marijuana after being charged yesterday at the Dubai Criminal Court of First Instance.

DUBAI // Two women are facing four years in jail for consuming marijuana after being charged yesterday at the Dubai Criminal Court of First Instance. MA, a 42-year-old Emirati who lives in Abu Dhabi, and FM, a 30-year-old Omani, were accused of using marijuana on July 22. Police obtained a warrant for FM's arrest after "a trusted source" told them she regularly consumed marijuana, a lieutenant testified.

She was arrested at the Union Co-op car park in Al Aweer and taken to provide a urine sample. She tested positive for the drug, according to prosecution records. The next day, a warrant was issued for MA's arrest, a police sergeant testified. She was located in Ajman, and when police searched the apartment they found two packs of rolling papers, the sergeant said. Police told prosecutors the women denied the charges, then later admitted to smoking hashish.

The judge will announce his verdict on October 13. amustafa@thenational.ae
