'Tourist insulted policeman and Islam', Dubai court hears

Drunk tourist who called police to report a robbery appears in court charged with insulting a policeman.

DUBAI // A female tourist who called police to report a robbery insulted and spat at an officer, a court heard today.

L?M, 28, from Holland, called the police after a thief ran off with her handbag, but when they arrived she became abusive.

Prosecutors told the Misdemeanours Court that she reported the robbery about 3.30am on January 4.

When the patrol met her on Sheikh Zayed Road near the Zaatar and Zeit restaurant she told them a thief had cut the strap of her bag then ran away with it.

“She was drunk, I could smell alcohol on her,” said the Emirati policeman M?A, 27. “She also insulted our religion.”

He said that when the woman finished telling him about the theft, she spat at him.

The woman was charged with expressing contempt to police officers and insulting Islam. She was also charged with illegal drinking.

She confessed to the alcohol charge, but denied the rest.

A verdict is expected on April 16.
