DUBAI // Four students were jailed for one year each after a policeman and a student were stabbed during a 25-man brawl which started after one man insulted another's sisters. The Emiratis AM, 18, AK, 22, and NM, 18, and the Omani HH, 24, were charged with attempted murder and assault as a result of Novemeber 2008 fight. AM and AK were also ordered to pay Dh20,000 fines, and the Omani will be deported after serving his term.
The incident was ignited when one student allegedly insulted the sisters of another, which led to the involvement of his family and friends. Knives, wrenches and tear gas were used in the brawl, resulting in the stabbing of a policeman and a student. The 22-year-old man stabbed policeman Marwan al Sumaiti in the chest near the heart while the Omani man stabbed the student, Mr al Sumaiti's nephew, in the chest and face.
Zayed Hassan, a Yemeni policeman, told prosecutors that they found the victims bleeding and that an ambulance was called. Paramedics were able to save the lives of the victims. A medium-sized knife was found on AK when he was arrested.
