Sharjah police bust gang linked to violent robberies

Officials say 10 suspects now in custody, accused of stealing cables and other materials from warehouses.

SHARJAH // A gang calling itself "Dogar Shehbaz" that committed a series of violent robberies in the emirate has been busted, police said today.

Ten members — seven Pakistanis and three Bangladeshis — were involved in a spate of robberies of warehouses, police say. They attacked security guards, beating them and threatening them with death if they revealed any details to police that would lead to their arrests, a police spokesman said.

"It was one of the most brutal gangs, which police were tracking for some time," he said. "They had in the past stolen electric wires and cables and other electronics from different warehouses."

A team of investigators from the industrial area police station focussed on several men living in  a residential flat in Muwailah area.

It was confirmed that the people there were related to other gang members in Industrial Area Two. Upon raiding a flat there, two Pakistani suspects were arrested, including the gang's mastermind, police said. Five other gang members were arrested at another flat.

The men confessed to the robberies and led the police to the warehouses they robbed, officials say. They also led police to the 10th gang member.

Police established that some of the suspects had been deported for crimes but had sneaked back into the country.

Four other men were arrested on charges they knowingly purchased stolen cables and wires.

All 14 suspects will be referred to the public prosecution.
