Sex assault verdict: three months for attack on friend

Man forced himself on friend while drunk, court rules.

DUBAI // An unemployed man who sexually assaulted a female friend at her home was sentenced to three months in prison this morning.

The Dubai Criminal Court of First Instance convicted the 28-year-old Emirati MM of sexual assault and illegal consumption of alcohol.

He denied the first charge and pleaded guilty to the second when he appeared in court in March. According to records, the two spent the night of June 23, 2010, at a club and consumed liquor.

The woman, a 27-year-old receptionist from the Philippines, told prosecutors that they returned to her house in Bur Dubai and, because he was drunk and unable to drive, she allowed him to sleep in her apartment.

Records show MM was used to spending time at the the woman's apartment because they were close friends.

She testified that after she went to her own bedroom to sleep, he entered her room and approached her. She said she was surprised and rejected him, but he hit her and restrained her.

The records said that MM assaulted her before she managed to push him away. She testified she kicked him out of the apartment and called police, records show.

MM was fined Dh1,000 for consuming alcohol.
