DUBAI // Seven Emirati men were charged in court yesterday with possessing, distributing and selling more than 9kg of hashish. The defendants, whose ages range from 22 to 35, were arrested in a major sting operation on April 26 by the Dubai Anti-Narcotics Department. Lt Abdullah Lootah told Dubai Criminal Court that the unit received a tip that SM, 35, was selling a large amount of hashish he had buried in the desert. Lt Lootah said he followed SM to al Qudrah road near Bab al Shams resort, where SM was seen to dig up a large bag out of the sand.
Police said SM met a car driven by NS, who they said he gave him Dh40,000 (US$18,890) for 5kg of hashish. NS is said to have sold 1kg of it to AB for Dh8,000 and 4kg to AA for Dh32,000. AA and a fifth man were arrested at the Crowne Plaza hotel. Police did not trace the other 4kg of hashish they said was trafficked, nor did they specify how the other two defendants were involved. The defendants all denied the charges and were remanded in custody. The case was adjourned.
