DUBAI // A Quran teacher allegedly molested an eight-year-old pupil, the Dubai Criminal Court of First Instance heard yesterday.
The defendant, SM, 45, a janitor from Bangladesh, was charged with inappropriately touching and sexually molesting the girl in her grandmother's house on September 14, the third day of Eid al Fitr.
According to prosecution records, SM was hired to teach the girl by her mother, FN.
"He used to teach our neighbour's children, so we hired him to teach my daughter," FN testified.
The man came to the house daily and allegedly frequently rubbed the girl's legs inappropriately during lessons, according to prosecutors. "He always did it and I was afraid to tell anyone because he used to scare me," the girl told prosecutors.
LR, the girl's aunt, told prosecutors: "On the day of the incident, he came to the house and sat in a chair adjacent to my niece's chair. I went into my room and came out a few minutes later and saw him reciting verses of the Quran while he had his hand on her left thigh, rubbing it.
"I stopped in shock, and he realised that I saw him, and he stuttered but then he pulled his hand away and continued reading.
"I did not know what to do, so I asked him to leave as we had to leave the house and go somewhere, and he left."
FN was told after she returned at 8.30 that evening.
"I asked my daughter after my sister told me, and she said that he has been doing that for some time. I then met him and faced him after informing police," she said.
The next court date is December 27. SM, who denies all charges, remains in police custody.
