'Mugger chase led to death'

DUBAI // An attempt to chase a mugger ended in the death of the man who had been robbed, a court was told.

Noorul Haq Rana was assaulted by AA, 41, on November 11 last year in Naif Souq, the Dubai Criminal Court of First Instance heard.

M S, a 31-year-old cleaner, told prosecutors he saw AA, from Pakistan, approach Rana and say he was a CID officer.

"The Pakistani man was asking him for his ID and he dragged him to an alleyway," MS said. "When I arrived in the alley I saw the defendant take Noorul Haq's money and run away."

The witness and the victim, from Bangladesh, chased AA but they ran into a group of AA's friends, prosecutors say.

"We got scared and decided to back off, but then AA grabbed Noorul and started beating him," M S said. Rana was knocked to the ground and hit his head on a loose manhole cover. He later died of his injuries, prosecutors say.

AA was charged with assault leading to death, theft and impersonation of a public official. He denies attacking the man.

The court will issue its verdict on March 15.
