Mechanic in fatal Dubai lift fall wore safety gear

The Indian man slipped while he was installing lifts at a building under construction in Al Karama area on April 17 last year.

Dubai // An assistant mechanic who plunged to his death in a lift shaft was wearing safety gear, his supervisor told a court yesterday.

Indian Dahaneesh Dahraman, 24, slipped while he was installing lifts at a building under construction in Al Karama area on April 17 last year.

His Indian supervisor S?S, 32, Pakistani M?E, 29 and his compatriot S?M, 35, assistant head of safety, were all charged with accidentally causing the death.

His co-workers called police and an ambulance, and the rescue team announced his death, which was caused by a brain haemorrhage.

S?S told prosecutors that he had been working with the lift company where the deceased worked for four years, and that on the day of the incident he heard the sound of something hitting the ground. “When I rushed to check in the first floor where Dahraman and I were standing, I didn’t find him, but looking into the lift’s shaft, I saw him lying on the floor,” said S?S.

He said the he and other workers carried the man back to the first floor before rescuers arrived, and added that the deceased was wearing his safety gear.

At the Dubai Court of Misdemeanours, S?S was present while the other two defendants failed to appear. The hearing was rescheduled for September 22 to summon the other defendants.
