ABU DHABI // A man accused of forging a Mawaqif ticket told a court today that another motorist had given it to him as a gift.
“An Indian man approached me as I parked my car and picked up my cash and ticket to pay,” said A?S, a Palestinian.
“He told me he had just bought his ticket but had to leave. So I paid him for it, Dh15, to avoid taking haram money.”
His lawyer, Tarek Al Serkal, said there must be something wrong with the system because the court had seen a lot of similar cases recently.
“I ask for my client to be acquitted and for maximum possible mercy to be shown to him,” Mr Al Serkal said.
An Emirati man in court stood up saying he would like to testify in the man’s defence, but the court could not hear him because he had already witnessed part of the trial.
“You should have told us from the start there was a witness as we would have asked him to step outside,” the judge told Mr Al Serkal.
A verdict is expected on May 8.
