Man appeals against his Dh20,000 fine for selling out-of-date food

ABU DHABI // A man convicted for selling food after its expiration date told the Appeals Court he had simply made a mistake.

FF, a Belgian whose exact role and workplace was not made clear, said the food would have been safe to consume as it was only one day past the expiration date.

He admitted stamping the wrong date on the product, but said he did this mistakenly, adding that he did not know UAE law required it to be sold within a single day. Court records did not mention what the product was.

The man is seeking a reduction of the Dh20,000 fine he was originally issued.

A verdict is expected on September 9.
