Man accused of Dh60,138 bump-grab robbery

DUBAI // A passerby stole Dh60,138 from a man crossing the street, a Dubai court heard this morning.

Prosecutors charged SB, 27, from Ethiopia, with forceful theft in a public place. He denied the charges.

According to records, BS attacked the victim, MS, an Iranian, from behind, kicked him in the leg and grabbed the money from his pocket. The cash was then handed to another man, who ran away and was not identified in records.

MS testified that at 10am on December 12, he was in Naif returning from Sour Al Madina Fabric Corporation after receiving the money in a business deal.

He said that when SB kicked his leg, “I though he was drunk so I didnt give him much attention”.

MS said that when he noticed the money was gone, he started screaming, “thief, thief!”

Three Criminal Investigation Division officers in civilian clothes heard him and chased SB, eventually arresting him, records show.

AM, one of the CID officers, told prosecutors that SB was screaming at them during the chase near Sahara Palace, telling them, “I will kill you if you catch me”.

The court will announce a verdict on March 30.
