DUBAI // Two brothers have been convicted of premeditated murder after they attacked a man with swords and a hammer before running him over and dragging his body beneath their SUV.
SO, 23, was sentenced to ten years in prison while his younger brother EO, 21, was sentenced to three years.
Prosecutors said the brothers were joined by a number of friends armed with swords, knives and a hammer as they chased their victim around Oud Al Mutaina on June 29 last year.
He managed to hide for a while between parked cars as the gang looked for him, but the brothers spotted him fleeing the car park.
The two got into their GMC and drove after him, with the older brother at the wheel.
While speeding after him, the GMC smashed into two cars before catching up and running their victim over. His body was dragged beneath the SUV for about 15 metres.
The brothers then stopped the vehicle, jumped out and fled.
SO and EO told Dubai Criminal Court they killed the man by accident.
But AG, a 27-year-old policewoman who lives in the neighbourhood and witnessed the attack, said the driver did not hesitate or slow down before hitting the man.
"Only four metres were between me and them," she said, adding she clearly saw the brothers inside the car as they drove towards the man.
When police arrived at the scene after AG called them to scene, they found a crowd surrounding the man's body. The brothers were found nearby and when police arrested them, the enraged crowd tried to assault them.
The older brother was found to be bleeding heavily from his back and blood covered the driver's seat of the GMC when police inspected it. Prosecution records did not explain how the injury occurred.
A hammer and knife, both bloodied, were also found in the car.
