DUBAI // A prisoner who set fire to the dining room at Al Qusais detention centre had his one year prison sentence upheld today.
TK, 23, an Emirati, was previously sentenced in absentia by the Criminal Court and objected the ruling. His case was heard by a new panel of judges who found him guilty and upheld the sentence against him.
He claimed he started the fire because he was being mistreated.
He used a cigarette lighter to set on fire a stuffed chair on July 4 last year. The fire then spread through the room.
HE, a police captain, 36, was on duty at the time. He said the prisoner told him he started the fire because he was being mistreated. Civil defence arrived and put out the flames.
In court, the prisoner denied the charge.
The court also upheld an order that the prisoner pay Al Qusais detention centre Dh980, the cost of damages caused by the fire.
