Houston murder case arraignment postponed

HOUSTON // The first court appearance of one of the two teenagers charged with the murder of an Emirati military officer who was shot dead during a robbery in the United States was postponed yesterday.

Detone Lewayne Price, 18, was scheduled to appear at the Harris County 178th Criminal District Court to face a charge of capital murder but did not appear in court.

Mr Price's lawyer Wayne T Hill asked that his court appearance be put back to November 15.

Police arrested Mr Price three days after the shooting on August 7 of Salem Saif Al Mazroui, a UAE military officer from Ras Al Khaimah.

Capt Al Mazroui was killed at his apartment in the San Marin complex in the Medical Center area of Houston, while visiting his father, Saif Al Mazroui, who was undergoing cancer treatment at the MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Mr Price has been charged with capital murder and is eligible for the death penalty.

Corey Trevon Perry, 17, has also been charged with capital murder, but cannot be executed if he is convicted because he was under 18 at the time of the shooting. He is due in court on October 13.
