DUBAI // A flight attendant has been jailed for two years for attempted rape.

His victim escaped by pretending she wanted to go and make herself look pretty for him, then went to the police.

Emirates Airline worker MH, 27, from Indonesia, invited the woman, 29, a friend of his girlfriend, to his apartment to drink vodka on October 4 last year.

But he became violent when she spurned his advances.

"He started kissing me so I stopped him," the woman said.

She said she told him he was a "good, well-mannered" man and should not behave in such a way, but he grabbed her and carried her to his bedroom before throwing her on the bed and ripping off her shorts.

"I cried and resisted as he tried to rape me," said the woman, who kicked him in the chest.

"He tried to force me into [a sex act] so I cooled down and pretended that I was willing to have sex with him but I needed to go to my apartment and tidy myself up to look better."

As soon as he let her go the woman called her friends. Police were contacted and the man was arrested.

He denied attempted rape at the Criminal Court but was sentenced to two years and ordered to pay a temporary compensation of Dh21,000 to the woman plus Dh500 in legal fees.

He will be deported after serving his prison sentence.
