DUBAI // A man accused of helping his friend cut off another man's pinkie finger has been acquitted of assault.
The Dubai Criminal Court had heard in 2009 that Iranian HR was part of a gang of 30 men who helped Emirati AA use a cleaver to cut off the small finger of Emirati RM.
RM said he was trying to mediate on behalf of a friend when he went to meet AA in April 2008.
When he arrived, he said he was set upon by about 30 men, most of them in masks, who attacked him with swords and knives. He said they inured him badly then cut off his finger after threatening to cut off his head.
Police charged only five men with assault, abetting an assault and causing disability: AA, HR, and two other men, Emiratis KA and MJ. All were found guilty and HR was sentenced in absentia to three months and fined Dh2,000.
Last year, HR presented himself to the court and objected to the sentence. He was acquitted this morning.
