Five-year sentence for rape of British woman

DUBAI // A 30-year-old sales representative was sentenced today to five years in prison for kidnapping and raping a British woman in October 2009. 

The man, SA, from Jordan, kidnapped the victim, who is in her 20s, and took her to the desert, where he assaulted her, court records said.

The incident began when he saw her waiting for a taxi in Jumeirah and offered her a ride, records said. She at first rejected his offer, but eventually gave in and got in the front seat. 

The victim told prosecutors she was leaving a nightclub late at night when the suspect approached her. She said she felt unsafe when she noticed the man was not driving towards her residence in Al Garhoud area, records said. 

SA drove to a remote area, stopped the car and raped her, records show. EA told prosecutors she was very scared and tried to resist, but was unable. 

After the incident, she reported the attack at Rashidiyah police station. A forensic exam confirmed she had been raped.

SA also was referred to the Court of Misdemeanours on charges of illegal consumption of alcohol and will be deported after serving his prison term.
