DUBAI // An airline check-in clerk was jailed for a year today for taking a bribe from a passenger with excess baggage.
K?M, 32, from Kenya, wept as she was told of her prison sentence and a fine of Dh1,000. She said she needed the money to treat her sick mother.
M?A, 33, a Kuwaiti armed forces officer, checked in for his Emirates airline on February 16 with 57 kilograms of luggage, 27kg more than he was allowed. The clerk told him he had to pay Dh1,500 for the excess weight.
When he asked if a discount was available, she told him to put Dh800 in an envelope. He handed over Dh750, but became suspicious when he was not given a receipt.
Before boarding his flight he asked police about the procedure for overweight baggage. Officers informed the airline and the woman was questioned.
She confessed and handed the envelope of money to her supervisor.
K?M pleaded guilty at Dubai Criminal Court. She will be deported after serving her prison term.
