Dubai woman fined for suicide bid after failed marriage proposal

DUBAI // A woman who tried to kill herself after her family rejected the proposal of a man hoping to marry her has been fined Dh1,000.

The Indian woman DP, a 30-year-old computer technician, admitted to prosecutors that she swallowed 25 tablets of Panadol on September 7 this year with the intention of ending her life.

However, she was saved after being rushed to Rashid Hospital where she spent the night vomiting.

The woman said she had suffered from severe depression since the proposal was turned down last August and had lost 12kgs in body weight during that time. She said she had been in love with the man for the past four years.

"I have been trying to convince my mother and brother but they rejected him because of religion and financial status," she said in a letter she presented to the Misdemeanours Court.

She said she lost control of her feelings on the day of her overdose, but had since recovered after being put on medication.

Her 32-year-old brother told prosecutors that his sister lived in India but often visited the UAE. He said she became depressed after he and his mother rejected the proposal of the man she was in love with.
