Dubai widower fined Dh3,000 after second suicide attempt

DUBAI // A grieving widower has been fined Dh3,000 after trying to kill himself with bug-spray in his second failed suicide attempt.

BI, a 30-year-old Indian watchman, spent two months in hospital after drinking a glass of Pepsi into which he had emptied a canister of Piff Paff.

He told the Misdemeanours Court that he had been unable to get over the sudden death of his wife two years ago and became suicidal.

Last year he tried to jump off the top of a building in Bur Dubai, but his friends stopped him.

Following his most recent suicide attempt police officers found him unconscious in front of the building where he worked in Meydan.

Police interrogated him while he was still in his hospital bed after his condition stabilised. He told them he could not stop thinking of his wife and was unable to get over her death.

"I drank alcohol every time I remembered her and felt down," he said, adding that on the day of his suicide attempt he drank some whisky because he was so depressed.

Prosecutors charged him with consuming alcohol in addition to attempting suicide.

He confessed to both charges.
