DUBAI // A babysitter who was locked in a villa by a thieving maid was rescued when her employer returned home and broke into his own home, a court heard today.
RA, 25, a maid from Bangladesh, stole Dh3,000 from the purse of her Filipina co-worker before locking her and the baby into their sponsor's house in Mirdif and running off, prosecutors told the Criminal Court.
"It was nearly 10am when I was with the baby in the sponsor's room when she locked up the door from the outside and left. I looked at her from the window and called for her but all she said was 'bye bye'," recalled the babysitter.
The sponsor of the two women, AA, 37, an Emirati, received a call from a neighbour telling him that his babysitter was banging on the window and screaming for help.
"I returned home and found the babysitter and the baby locked up so I broke the door and asked the babysitter what had happened," said the sponsor. The babysitter told him the maid had stolen Dh3,000 from her bag that she had been intending to send to her family.
The sponsor told the court he hired the maid about six months before the incident took place on September 17 last year.
In court, the maid confessed to locking up the babysitter but denied theft.
A verdict is expected on April 29.
