DUBAI // Two bootleggers who beat a rival to death because they feared he would expose them were each sent to prison for five years yesterday.
AS, 41, and MA, 30, from Pakistan, claimed they killed Kulindar Kumar "by mistake".
"He knew we were in the bootlegging business and we were afraid he would report us to police," they testified. "We had a heated argument with him and he assaulted us and we assaulted him back, but we did not mean to kill him."
Prosecutors told the Criminal Court the pair beat their compatriot and fellow bootlegger on the head with a stick, leaving him unconscious and bleeding in the industrial area of Jebel Ali on December 2 last year.
An Indian blacksmith PR, 23, found Kumar and called the emergency services, who took him to Rashid Hospital. He was in a coma and died a few days later.
Police tracked down the attackers by interviewing people who visited Kumar in hospital.
The men will be deported after their jail terms.
