Bootleggers jailed for murder in Dubai

A gang of bootleggers already on trial for the rape, torture and murder of two rivals, was today convicted of beating a third man to death.

DUBAI // A gang of bootleggers already on trial for the rape, torture and murder of two rivals was today convicted in Dubai of beating a third man to death before burying his body in a shallow sandy grave.

Two Indian men were jailed for life at Dubai's Criminal Court of First Instance for the murder of a rival bootlegger, identified only as "number 36", who was attacked with swords, machetes, pipes and wooden blocks, before his body was dumped and left only partially covered by sand.

Five other Indian men were sentenced to 15 years in prison for offences related to the murder, which took place in November 2008 behind the Samsung office in Jebel Ali.

The defendants were not present in court this morning to hear the verdicts.

A Pakistani man also charged in connection with the brutal attack, was jailed for 10 years.

The charge came after they were arrested for the murder, rape and torture of another two rival gang members on January 1, 2009, one of whom has been named as Abu Baker Nujila.

The judge yesterday adjourned returning a verdict on these charges until February 7.
