Dubai // Car enthusiasts, collectors and petrol-heads rolled out their best machines at the Downtown Dubai Classic Car Show yesterday, offering a unique look at some of the most treasured motor vehicles made in the past century. Spectators gathered along Emaar Boulevard, near the Burj Khalifa, to enjoy the nostalgia. Marzouq al Mansoori, arrived with his prized 1947 Chevrolet, which won the pick-up truck category last year. He also showed his cherry red 1959 Chevrolet Impala.
"I have been interested in classic cars for the past seven years," said Mr al Mansoori. "I bought the pick-up four years ago from the United States and worked on it in Abu Dhabi. "I bought the Impala after I fell in love with it. It's an antique designer car. It cannot be valued with money." The Best in Show was awarded to a 1970 Ferrari 246 GT. The Heritage class winner was a 1966 Volkswagen Samba.
In the pick-up truck category, a 1946 Chevrolet 3100 won top honour. Movie buffs got a chance to see some iconic cars - a 1924 Ford Model T coupe similar to the one driven by Johnny Depp in the film Public Enemies, and the 1969 Pontiac GTO muscle car featured in the television show The Dukes of Hazard. Fans also got to see a 1956 Cadillac ambulance, the same model that was used to transport the Ghostbusters across New York City. The Sharjah Classic Cars Museum displayed a Willys Jeep, which became famous during the Second World War.
