Campaign for cleaner capital gets under way

ABU DHABI // The Abu Dhabi Centre of Waste Management has started a campaign to clean up streets in the capital. Crews worked on the Abu Dhabi Corniche from Saturday to pick up litter, remove graffiti and empty rubbish bins. The first phase of the campaign, which is to end this Saturday, will focus on the city of Abu Dhabi and surrounding area. The second phase will be in Al Gharbia. Majed al Mansouri, the director of the centre, ordered the campaign after a study conducted by the centre identified problem areas in the capital. He urged residents, businesses and communities to play their part in helping to make the emirate cleaner. The campaign will not affect the daily waste collection and cleaning services provided by contractors but will pay attention to finer details such as discarded cigarette butts, food waste and soft-drink cans. ealghalib@thenational.ae
