Bani Yas cop-shooting gunmen get death sentence

Two men who shot and attacked two undercover policemen in a botched drug deal in Bani Yas are sentenced to death by the criminal court.

ABU DHABI // Two drug dealers who shot two undercover police in a botched hashish deal were sentenced to death yesterday.

M?K, 26, an Emirati, was also sentenced to life imprisonment for attempted murder and ordered to pay Dh10,000 compensation to one officer and Dh40,000 to the other. He was given a four-year sentence for consuming hashish and six months for possessing weapons.F?A, from Yemen, was given 10 years and fined Dh20,000 for resisting arrest and attacking the policemen.

The death sentences supersede the others, said Chief Justice Sayed Absul Baseer, head of the Criminal Court. The President, Sheikh Khalifa, will decide the method of execution. Death sentences and life imprisonment are subject to automatic appeal.

The two tried to sell 20kg of hashish to undercover agents in Bani Yas in February. F?A was arrested at the scene. M?K initially escaped after shooting the two undercover officers but was arrested two hours later trying to flee to Yemen.
