Construction company labourers in the audience of the Western Union Camp Ka Champ contest last August.

Auditions to start for 'Dubai Idol'

DUBAI // The new season of a singing contest for construction workers begins next week as organisers involve labourers from Abu Dhabi and Sharjah for the first time. Registrations for the Western Union Camp Ka Champ, known in labour camps as "Dubai Idol", start on Thursday. Contest judges will visit dozens of labour accommodations and listen to workers audition. The best will qualify for the elimination rounds leading up to the finals. The programme began in 2007.

"We are aiming at targeting over 100,000 residents through this year's program," said Rupa Vinod, the managing director of Rightrack Advertising, which conducts the event. Auditions will begin the third week of this month in Dubai, with Abu Dhabi and Sharjah to follow, she said. The semi-finals and finals will be held in October. A panel of experts, along with votes from the audience, will decide the winners.

This year, labourers from more than 40 firms are expected to participate. The top three singers will be chosen at the end of contest. The winners will earn money and prizes, such as television sets, music systems and gift vouchers. @Email:pmenon@thenational.ae
