Al Ain Police issue 414% more tickets

AL AIN // Traffic police issued more than five times as many tickets for driving violations during the first quarter of this year, compared with the same period last year. The police credited the 414 per cent increase to awareness campaigns, an increase in police patrols and to the installation of speed cameras throughout the city. Col Khalifa al Khili, head of the traffic and patrols division of Al Ain Police, said police had been running publicity drives in malls and elsewhere, to encourage safe driving and reduce the number of accidents.

Speed cameras in Al Ain, like those in Dubai, are set to catch motorists travelling 15km per hour over the speed limit. Drivers in Abu Dhabi have 20kph of leeway. Cameras on the motorways from Abu Dhabi to Al Ain and Dubai are set for 150kph, 30kph over the limit. ealghalib@thenational.ae
