Abu Dhabi Police arrest 90 suspected cyber criminals

ABU DHABI // Ninety people implicated in 60 cyber crimes were arrested in the capital last year.

Two of the 90 suspects had links to an international organised crime syndicate specialising in cyber fraud.

The crimes of those arrested included scams, cons, insults, defamation, blackmail, and credit card and bank account thefts, according to Col Rashed Mohammed Bourshid, head of CID at Abu Dhabi Police. During the same period, 110 people fell prey to cyber criminals.

Residents should be wary of these operators, said Col Bourshid, who added that a growing number were being lured by "fake award scams", in which con artists attempt to extract personal information or money in exchange for a non-existent prize.

Abu Dhabi Police will continue their awareness campaigns to educate the public, he said.
