80% of restaurants break law, Abu Dhabi inspectors find

Four out of five restaurants inspected by food-control officers in Mussaffah and Industrial City Abu Dhabi (Icad) broke the law.

Of 130 restaurants inspected by the Food Control Authority, eight were charged with serious food-safety offences and 95 received warnings.

In Mussaffah, 27 of 91 restaurants were in full compliance with safety rules. At Icad, where all 39 inspected restaurants were supplying food to labour camps, none were in full compliance and eight breached regulations.

Offences included poor ventilation, unclean cooking areas and piling food in refrigerators in a way that could lead to cross contamination.
