Dubai is famous for many homemade icons such as the Burj Khalifa and Palm Jumeirah. Now it is importing one from New York. Bloomingdale's luxury department store opens its doors today in Dubai. "Bloomies" is at the heart of New York's Upper East Side, with the flagship store occupying an entire city block. The seven-floor emporium represented a big step up from humble beginnings of the brothers Joseph and Lyman Bloomingdale who opened a shop in 1861 selling hoop-skirts to immigrants.
Bloomingdale's pioneered the use of giant theatrical window displays and designer shopping bags. Shoppers gather at no less than four restaurants. No sophisticated New York TV comedy series - from Friends to Sex and the City - is complete without a loving reference to Bloomies. Now the women of Dubai will echo the call of their sisters in New York: "See you at Bloomies!"
