Nissan makes Indian switch

CHENNAI // Nissan is hoping to increase its market share in the growing Indian market, as well as cutting production costs on cars slated for European consumers, through an increased manufacturing presence at the company's Chennai plant. The company ceased production of the Nissan Micra in the UK and will be manufacturing Micras in Chennai from May. The Micras produced in Chennai will be intended for sale in Europe. Nissan is also looking to boost Indian sales of the Nissan Teana saloon car and X-Trail off-roader by bringing in kits for these models to be assembled in Chennai as well. Currently, the cars are imported as complete units but moving the assembly to India would reduce import taxes and make both models more competitive in the domestic market. As well as an increased manufacturing presence in India, Nissan also plans to open 55 more dealerships across the nation over the next two years.
