Living and working in the UAE’s skyscraper-strewn cityscapes, we seem to spend an inordinate amount of our lives stuck in the steel cages that are lifts.
Usually, while waiting for our floor, we stare at the red numbers on the display. Sometimes, if we’re not alone, we resort to reading imaginary text messages on our phones to avoid eye contact or conversation.
But you could spend these moments of vertical travel creating a photographic masterpiece instead.
The Middle East office of the Finnish lift manufacturer Kone is launching a competition on July 10 for UAE residents to take photos from within a lift.
“Whatever you see in the elevator, or if it’s a glass elevator, whatever you see outside it, you just take a picture of it,” explains the company’s marketing and communication specialist Noha Kadora. “Then you upload it to our Facebook page with a small write-up of what motivated you to take it.”
Outside the box
Most lifts are featureless boxes that don’t exactly inspire great creativity. So Kadora suggests you ride any of the glass-sided lifts that can be found in the UAE. “Some elevators have great views. For example, the elevators at the JW Marriott Marquis in Dubai have a window,” she says. “Or it could be what you see inside the lift or when the doors open. They all count.”
Giving a lift
By entering the competition, you could win a hotel stay at Jumeirah at Etihad Towers in Abu Dhabi or dinner vouchers to restaurants.
Kadora says she is expecting some intriguing entries – and believes her competition could overcome awkward silences. “Maybe taking a photo could spark up a conversation with the people with you,” she says.
