Tunnel vision at Shanghai university

SHANGHAI // After five years of construction, China's first wind tunnel has been opened at a cost of $72 million (Dh264 million). The project at Tongji University is part of China's ambitious plans to become the world's leading producer of vehicles. It will be used for the testing of cars, buses, SUVs, trucks, aeroplanes and trains, in particular new-energy and high-speed vehicles. Chinese car makers will now be able to test cars locally rather than sending them to wind tunnels in other countries and this is expected to save up to 15 per cent in research and development costs.
