Speed not big crash factor
WASHINGTON DC // A new study published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in the United States reports that the majority of road accidents are not caused by cars travelling at excessive speeds. The NHTSA findings reveal only five per cent of car accidents were caused by cars "travelling too fast for the conditions". Driver error - defined as being distracted, overcompensating behind the wheel or not paying attention accounted for 41 per cent of accidents, while other causes of crashes included drivers who drifted onto the wrong carriageway (11 per cent) and those who drove off the edge of a road (22 per cent).
