Mushrif Mall, the capital's newest shopping centre, has had what you could call a soft opening. After more than a year of waiting for its completion, the shops inside have opened quietly and slowly over several months and without any real fanfare. Now, most are trading, including House & Home's most anticipated store: Lakeland.
Dubai, of course, already has two branches of this British kitchen and homeware store, but this is Abu Dhabi's first and there really is nothing else like it. For those unfamiliar, Lakeland specialises in quirky domestic labour savers you don't find anywhere else. As such it has something of a cult appeal and a very loyal fan base. People who love Lakeland really love it, not only because everything is reasonably priced but also because each visit reveals new products you didn't know you needed to make your domestic life complete. You go in for a pair of oven gloves, you leave with a Poachpod (for the perfect poached egg every time), a bag that makes grilled sandwiches in a standard toaster and a magic kit that cleans your oven for you. Who could resist?
Most of the store is given over to kitchen essentials and accessories, bakeware and alternative cleaning products (you can also order anything from the website, www.lakeland.co.uk, for delivery to the store), but the fun here is had browsing the countless odd, quirky gadgets and products that make life in the home easier, cleaner and simpler. And who isn't in favour of that?
