Glasgow-based entrepreneur Samuel Sparrow studied illustration and visual merchandising at art school, before working for big homeware companies such as Ikea and Habitat. Fizzing with ideas and determined to create an elegant boutique, earlier this year he set up his own online shop, Sparrow and Co.
This is a small and select affair. Sam has scoured the globe to source exclusive, handmade products and compiled a gorgeous-yet-compact collection which he intends to grow. So far, you'll find products from Morocco, Wales, England and, of course, Scotland - but a glance at the new finds on his blog reveals stock is on the way from the likes of Asia, Central America and Uzbekistan. His photography is first class - all close-ups and mood shots - and it's impossible not to be drawn in.
Here, you'll find stunning woollen cushion covers made from vintage fabric woven over 40 years ago at an ancient mill in Pentrecwrt, Wales. Covered in a traditional Welsh Caernafon pattern, they're a lovely mustard colour and ultra rustic. I love the pretty hand-punched Moroccan lanterns, too, made from recycled tins. They'd look pretty lined up in the centre of a dining table, and no two are the same.
As well as sourcing beautiful buys, Sam's created some of his own.
He's teamed up with an illustrator friend, Debbie Powell, to design and make a range of exclusive candles and notebooks. Covered in Celtic-inspired, tribal-looking patterns, these affordable little accessories are a real treat. The candles have intriguing names such as Campfire (coconut, wood smoke and vanilla) and Drawing Room (sandalwood, patchouli and leather), while the notebooks are just the right size for making shopping lists.
With new products on the way, including hand-turned solid walnut candlesticks, quilts sewed from vintage Indian saris and patterned papier-mache decorations, Mr Samuel Sparrow is clearly a man with a plan. This shop is definitely one to watch.
