Abu Dhabi's Sir Bani Yas island's new giraffes grow up and up

Off the coast of Abu Dhabi, the wildlife reserve on the island of Sir Bani Yas is home to many species, but few animals have such appeal as the fascinating giraffe.

Three have been born on the island recently – one late last year, another in mid-January and the third in the first week of February – so we thought we’d go and meet them.

They might look reasonably tall already at around two metres, but by giraffe standards they are still tiny: the adults grow to between five and six metres.

With the males and females separated earlier this year to help control the numbers, there are no plans to breed more for the moment. For more on Sir Bani Yas island visit www.desertislands.com.
