Tav stops work at Libya airports

Tav Group shuts down airport construction projects valued at 2 billion in war-torn Libya and evacuates more than 4,000 employees.

Tav Group, an airport specialist based in Turkey, has shut down airport construction projects valued at 2 billion (Dh10.36bn) in war-torn Libya.

The company has evacuated more than 4,000 employees, most of them from Vietnam and Thailand, said Mustafa Sani Sener, the chief executive.

Tav is about halfway through construction of the new international airport terminal in Tripoli, which was originally awarded in 2007. The project, a joint venture with Odebrecht and Consolidated Contractors Company, included the construction of two buildings to handle 20 million passengers a year.

The company has also stopped work on the 75,000 square metre expansion of Sebha International Airport, Mr Sener said. Construction of the terminal is still in its early stages.

But Mr Sener said the company was not abandoning the projects. "I'm very sure that everything will be settled in Libya," he said.

The company also operates the Enfidha and Monastir airports in Tunisia, where business is returning to normal, Mr Sener said. Tav is on the shortlist of bidders to build the Abu Dhabi International Airport Midfield Terminal. The company expects a preferred bidder to be named in July, Mr Sener said.

Tav is also bidding for a contract to expand Medina airport in Saudi Arabia.
