Madonna directs a romantic drama based on the scandalous love affair between King Edward VIII of England (James D’Arcy) and the American divorcee, Wallis Simpson (Andrea Riseborough). A parallel story of a modern-day trophy wife, Wally Winthrop (Abbie Cornish), who is having a romance with a Russian security guard, is told in tandem. The film has been described as smartly shot and the acting solid. Unfortunately, Madge’s direction hasn’t garnered such praise. “What an extraordinarily silly, preening, fatally mishandled film this is. It may even surpass 2008’s Filth and Wisdom, Madonna’s calamitous first outing as a filmmaker. Her direction is so all over the shop that it barely qualifies as direction at all,” writes Xan Brooks in a review for The Guardian.
