The Way Back

It’s been a while since there was a decent film about the Second World War but this movie about a group of prisoners who escape from a Siberian gulag certainly fits the bill. 

Inspired by The Long Walk, the book by a real-life Polish POW Sławomir Rawicz, actors Jim Sturgess, Colin Farrell, above, and Ed Harris play a Pole, a Russian and an American respectively as they make it out of their camp and into the blinding snow. 

What follows is a journey that is both brutal and poignant, under the excellent direction of Peter Weir. 

Sturgess, as Janusz, once again proving his worth as one of the UK’s best cinematic performers.
