Meryl Streep is a nominee for Best Actress at this year’s Oscars for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in a biopic about the longest serving prime minister of the United Kingdom of the 20th century. The Iron Lady is directed by Phyllida Lloyd, who also worked with Streep on Mamma Mia!, not exactly the crowning jewel of Streep’s career. According to Chicago Sun-Times film critic Robert Ebert, The Iron Lady also falls short, failing to go beyond outlining key chapters in her rise from a “grocer’s daughter from Grantham” to the most powerful person in the country: “Streep creates an uncanny impersonation of British prime minister Margaret Thatcher, but in this film she’s all dressed up with nowhere to go ... Was she a monster? A heroine? The movie has no opinion.”
