Red Riding Hood

This adaptation of the famous fairytale shares the same director as Twilight, Catherine Hardwicke, but instead of a vampire, there’s a werewolf. Amanda Seyfried plays Valerie, the red-cloaked heroine who fancies a poor woodcutter (Shiloh Fernandez) but is betrothed to a boy from a wealthy family (Max Irons). When a woman in their village is savaged to death, Solomon (Gary Oldman) is summoned to hunt down the culprit who also takes human form – presumably as the woodcutter or rich boy. There is an unearthly atmosphere about every frame and Seyfried is enchanting but the critics have not been kind to this film. Some call it a Twilight rip-off or say it’s not scary enough. Others lament the notion of a lovelorn teen as the wolf, instead of it being a singular malevolent force.
