Hall Pass

This is the latest attempt by the Farrelly brothers to make a decent film since There’s Something About Mary of 1998. Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis play Rick and Fred, men whose marriages are in trouble, the rot of routine having set in. Their wives Maggie (Jenna Fischer) and Grace (Christina Applegate), give them “hall passes” – a week of freedom from their marriage vows. The San Francisco Chronicle’s Mick LaSalle made the point that in this genre it is “...preordained that every movie must end up reinforcing monogamous matrimony as an ideal...” which can be limiting when you are trying to avoid cliches. It may not be destined for the same breakout success as Mary but if you like Owen Wilson, he is on fine form, and you can be assured of laughing out loud at least a few times.
