Majid Al Futtaim (MAF) Group will add as many as 40 new stores and additional parking space to its landmark Mall of the Emirates in Dubai in a Dh500 million expansion drive. The project will feature a series of new yet-to-be-named luxury brands, several of which will be making their debut in the Middle East. "This will be a very natural extension to the centre in terms of design and architecture," explained Shahram Shamsaee, senior vice president of retail for MAF Shopping Malls. "We are aiming for an enhancement of the luxury brand sector."
Due for completion in 2010, MAF will build 10,500 square metres of new gross leasable area (GLA), a direct link to the new Dubai metro, as well as 750 extra parking spaces. Officials said the expansion was aimed to better service the roughly 2.4 million shoppers that visit the mall each month. "Extending an old building is always quite complicated because you are dealing with a live asset. You've got customers and retailers that are open and you have to communicate to people about how you carry out your program," said Mr Shamsaee.
The announcement comes just weeks before the opening of Emaar's Dubai Mall on Oct. 30 - set to temporarily become the world's largest until the proposed Mall of Arabia is built, and the only domestic mall larger than Mall of the Emirates. email@example.com
