The real estate developer Gulf Related has awarded the Australian contractor Brookfield Multiplex a US$425 million contract to build the Al Maryah Central mall in Abu Dhabi.

The contract marks the completion of enabling works and the start of vertical construction on Al Maryah Island. Work is slated for completion in March 2018.

The $1 billion complex will house 400 retail outlets, including the first Macy’s store outside the United States and the first Bloomingdale’s in Abu Dhabi.

It will also have 145 restaurants and cafes, a 20-screen cinema, a health club, public library, food market and creche.

There will also be three rooftop parks between two towers. One of the towers will have a hotel and serviced apartments and the other will house apartments.

Al Maryah Central will also link directly to Gulf Related’s existing The Galleria mall.

Brookfield Multiplex has a long history in the Middle East, where it has built the Emirates Towers and The Gate at Dubai International Financial Centre. It is also the main contractor for Emaar Properties’ 72-storey The Address The BLVD tower in Downtown Dubai and the Zaha Hadid-designed The Opus building in Business Bay for Omniyat.

Gulf Related is a joint venture between Abu Dhabi-based Gulf Capital and New York-based Related Real Estate.
