Dubai Sports City is one of several themed developments in Dubailand, a 278-square-km master-planned development.
Original plans called for amusement parks, mega-shopping malls and tourist attractions grouped around residential developments.
Construction on most of the entertainment elements was put on hold last year, but the Dubai Properties Group, the lead developer, says a review of the master plan should be completed by the end of the year.
Dubai Sports City is designed as a collection of apartment towers and villa projects built around international-quality sports facilities.
The original plan, covering 464 hectares, includes a 60,000-seat multipurpose stadium, two cricket stadiums, a 10,000-seat indoor arena, an Ernie Els-designed golf course and a Manchester United football school.
Other themed communities under development include Motor City, built around the Dubai Autodrome; Falconcity of Wonders, which was designed to include replicas of the Taj Mahal, Eiffel Tower and Egyptian pyramids; and City of Arabia, which would include the world's largest shopping mall and a dinosaur theme park.
